Yeni’s Story
Yeni came to the United States from Honduras in 2018. She left her family, her son and all that she knew to make a better life for herself and her little boy. While in the United States she sought legal assistance and was often quoted over $5,000 dollars to get her case started with basic immigration assistance. Unable to afford those costs she turned to self-help agencies, but such help was also inaccessible to her as she had no way of physically getting to them without transportation or digital technology assistance. With no bank account, no cell phone, no access to governmental resources she managed to find a few places to sleep at and little by little navigated her way through the complex USCIS system. In 2019, she met Kristina Brown and together they worked to get her immigration case off the ground. SFH provided free document preparation and translation support, transportation to and from her immigration appointments, and guidance on attaining work and preparing tax returns. Today she is a US resident and still working with SFH to prepare the legal documents needed to bring her young son to the United States to live with her. She is actively creating goals and a strategic business plan to open her dream business of a mobile food cart. She has been learning to manage a bank account, maintain current tax documents, incorporate a business, and all the other skills needed to become a successful single-mom and business owner.
